Blood and fire, salt water and frozen winds.
That was how I was born into this world and how I was reborn into it and it will likely be how I leave it, if I have my say. I was born on a boat rocked and ravaged by a storm beaten on all sides with wind and waves but in the end, damaged but whole, it came through and so did I. I’m a survivor at heart, I do what it takes to get by. My mother was being smuggled over into the country from somewhere else in Europe. Maybe Russia, who knows? She died before I was old enough to find out and it was into children’s services I went, getting adopted by a couple of middle class royalty loving simpletons. Because I was a quiet and sullen boy they gave me a new name. Edwin Joseph De’Ath. I’m sure they thought it sounded high class.
But I was a trouble maker from the start. I was 10 or so on the beach with friends, a beaver scout trip. Storm blew in real fast and real mean. We were supposed to help put out the fire and head for shelter but I didn’t want to, the wind and the fire was lovely. Pretty in a way.
He tried to pull me, I pushed him. He pushed back and then the fight was on. In the end we both got burned and I bit off one of his fingers. It was the taste of blood in my mouth that did it for me. Someone else’s blood. I woke up to the real world and I knew I was different. I ran then, disappearing into the wilderness for a couple of weeks. I was tracked down quick enough by a nasty piece of work Eshu who knew and dealt with some of my kind. Redcaps. He took me to them and it was there I learned what I was.
I eventually went back home after a while, my parents seemed to forget about my difficulties given I’d been missing a couple of months. I lived with them for a while longer, taking advantage of their generosity and love to ensure I would be alright on my own. I learned what I had to learn from my new family and my old family before I cut all ties and went out on my own. The ocean called to me. I was young enough but I looked older and I lied my way onto a salvage boat and it was there I learned my craft. How to man a boat, how to pick a spot and dive for whatever remained below the waves. How to tell the weather from the feel of the air, the look of the sky.
By the time I once more struck out on my own, buying my own boat…more or less…I had a special lucky golden coin salvaged from a wreck mostly picked clean. I also had a reputation among the sort of people who want to bring things to shore and avoid customs. The captain of the boat I served on dealt with them and when I struck out on my own I had a word with them, let them know I was a private contractor and if they wanted to make use of my services, they could reach me at a number I provided. I didn’t need to advertise that shit, the word would spread among those who needed to know.
Course lately things have been getting a little tense inland with tensions rising between folks. I can smell blood and fire on the wind, sure as the sun rises in the east. That sort of thing brings a bit of a smile to my face. These are the times when a man could make a fortune. Course I can’t get involved in that shit just now. I gotta protect my own interests and that involved getting something of mine back. I was out at a rowdy event maybe six months ago, had more to drink that I should have. I’d thought it was a good night that ended with a great fight. Didn’t notice until I got home that one of my teeth was missing. Now I ain’t superstitious much, but that’s a chance I can’t take. Taken me awhile to track down who it was that has my tooth, but I found her. Now I just gotta get it back.
